Locations

Geographically, the twin cities of Albury Wodonga sit astride the Murray River, which acts as the state border between NSW and Victoria. The Murray is renowned as Australia’s greatest river, travelling 2530kms by the time it reaches its end. At Albury Wodonga, the river is wide with a strong current and has an abundance of wildlife living in it and along its banks. The Hume Dam is also located on the river just east of Albury Wodonga, providing a dramatic playground for water enthusiasts. The Murray above Hume Dam is narrower and more mountain-stream like. Stretching out from the river on either side is an abundant, natural food bowl that is surrounded by an undulating skyline of gentle hills and, to the south and east, the spectacular alpine regions of the Great Dividing Range.

Street maps of Albury Wodonga are available online at the Albury Wodonga Corporation website at www.awc.gov.au/street

Hard copy maps can be obtained from our Visitor Information Centre.

Sweeping views

Huon Hill Lookout: Magnificent 360 degree views are available from Wodonga’s Huon Hill lookout, from which you can see the Alps (in winter snow is visible), Lake Hume (which holds six times the amount of water of Sydney Harbour), the twin cities and our fertile plains. The tip from local rangers is that the best view is available if you take the walking track.
Location: Access from Kenneth Mason Drive, Wodonga
Distance from city centre:  10 minutes from Wodonga

Table Top Mountain: Offers spectacular views of Lake Hume, twin cities and southern NSW.
Location: Turn left off Hume Highway north of Albury at Olympic Way (road to Albury Wodonga) and follow signs (approx 10kms from turnoff).
Distance from city centre:  Approx. 15 minutes from Albury CBD.

Monument Hill: Monument Hill affords the best vantage point for photographs of central Albury, with a sweeping view down the main street and the north Albury hillside.
Location: Padman Drive, Albury
Distance from city centre:  Less than five minutes from Albury CBD.

The Murray River

Water levels in the Murray are affected by irrigation releases so to capture the river at its best, mid-January to March is the best time of year for photography. The winter months are when the river is at its lowest and is least attractive.

Noreuil Park: One of Albury Wodonga’s most popular recreational areas right in the heart of the twin cities. In summer it is a haven for families and people looking to cool off in the Murray River. Also home to the Paddlesteamer Cumberoona.
Location: Access via Wodonga Place, Albury.
Distance from city centre:  Less than five minutes

Junction of the Murray and Kiewa Rivers: This is an interesting location where the narrower, more mountain-stream-like Kiewa River flows into the wide Murray. Access only through prior arrangement with Parklands Albury Wodonga, with a 4WD required in winter months.
Location: Huon Hill Parklands, access via Kenneth Mason Drive, Wodonga
Distance from city centre:  Approx 10 minutes from Wodonga

Mungabareena Reserve:  Located in a bend of the Murray River just north of Albury, this spot has been a traditional gathering point for Aboriginal tribes for thousands of years. A good spot for photographs requiring a grassy area right up to the water (at the right time of year).
Location: Take Riverina Highway (heading east), turn right into Mungabareena Rd not far after hospital.
Distance from city centre:  10 minutes from Albury CBD

The Kiewa River

Killara crossing: (Also referred to as Kiewa River car park or track head) Beautiful spot that easily accessed from the Murray Valley Highway (Tallangatta Rd). Particularly good in the mornings but watch out for the (friendly) red-bellied black snake.
Location: Killara Bridge, Murray Valley Highway, Killara.
Distance from city centre: 10 minutes from Wodonga

Lake Hume

There are a number of excellent vantage points to best take in the beauty of Lake Hume, on both sides of the border. The dam wall – one of Australia’s greatest engineering projects - is probably the focus of interest and can be found not far from the Lake Hume Resort.

Location: Take either the Riverina Highway east of Albury or the Murray Valley Highway, turning off at Bonegilla, to get there.  A track opposite the Hume Trout Farm will take you down to a spot where you can view the wall from downstream.
Distance from city centres: Approx. 15-minute drive from either Albury or Wodonga.

Wonga Wetlands

A lovely location for nature-based photography with 30 species of birds living in the wetlands.
Location: Access via Riverina Highway, west of Albury.
Distance from city centre: Five minutes from Albury.
